What is a Hosted Learnership? Who Does What? The Secret to Success Become a Host
What is a Hosted Learnership?
What is a Hosted Learnership

A hosted Learnership is a partnership between two companies, whereby one company (the sponsor) funds the Learnership programme, and the other company (the host) provides the workplace facility and dedicated mentors to assist and guide learners.

Relationship to the learner:

Sponsor:

  • Contractually agrees to employ those learners for a specified period of time.
  • They are the learners’ primary employer and responsible for the full employment relationship.

Host:

  • Contractually agrees to provide the learners with an appropriate and equipped workplace.
  • Their HR policies and workplace procedures will apply to the learners during this time.
Who Does What?
Who Does What?

It is important that the sponsor, host and training provider meet prior to the commencement of the Learnership programme to draw up and sign a Service Level Agreement. A proper agreement and clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each party is essential for success.

Sponsor Responsibilities:

  • Manages the full employment relationship with the learners; including recruitment, disciplinary, grievance and dispute resolution procedures. Should the learner’s attendance and behaviour be flagged, it would be the sponsor’s responsibility to address this. The sponsor must have an employment contract in place with each learner. This would clearly state the rules of engagement and the consequences of misconduct.
  • Covers the following costs: the learner’s monthly stipend, recruitment costs, host fees and training fees.

Host Responsibilities:

  • Provides the learner with appropriate practical training and work experience, in order to achieve the relevant outcomes required for the learnership.
  • Provides a compatible workplace facility to help the learners (abled and disabled) effectively apply their learning outcomes.
  • Induct the learners into their workplace, educate them on workplace policies and procedures
  • Releases learners for their training interventions.
  • Allocates experienced mentors to support and supervise the learners to achieve their workplace goals.
  • Keeps records and provide feedback to the learner and other parties.

Training Provider Responsibilities:

  • Inducts new learners into the training programme.
  • Provides the necessary training at the agreed upon location (normally the host company).
  • Assigns a Project Coordinator to manage and the successful implementation of the programme and to provide the host and sponsor with information and guidance.
  • Assigns a Learning Coordinator to engage with and support the learners.
  • Tracks the learners progress and provide regular reports and updates to the relevant parties.

If requested:

  • Sources and vets a reliable and compatible host company.
  • Supplies the sponsor with possible learners, abled or disabled, that are correctly aligned with the chosen qualification.

Learner Responsibilities:

  • Follows all policies and procedures applicable at the host company.
  • Is dedicated to showing up and completing all learnership requirements.
The Secret to Success
The Secret to Success

A Learnership in itself is an extremely complex and often challenging project. Success requires:

  • Alignment between the training provider, sponsor and host (clear agreements).
  • Dedication and commitment from all parties.
  • Continuous monitoring and reporting on learners.
  • Sound project management of the programme.
  • Affective, clear and supportive workplace training and mentoring.
  • Accountable parties with clear roles and responsibilities.

Learner engagement, retention and completion is dependent on a number of key factors:

  • Selecting the right host to provide the right workplace.
  • Choosing the right qualification.
  • Identifying the right learners.
  • Designing and executing the right plan.
  • Providing the right support.
  • Appointing dedicated mentors.
